Louise Dodds Quartet Scottish jazz vocalist Louise Dodds will be making her debut at The Vortex tonight performing songs from her latest album ‘The Story Needs an Ending’ as part of her UK tour. Released in March 2022, the album is a deeply personal collection of songs written and arranged by Louise, which are both moving and uplifting. Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat Gravy Boat is a contemporary, cinematic jazz quintet led by Leeds based saxophonist and composer Emma Johnson. Without doubt the most celebrated gypsy jazz guitarist since Django Reinhardt and arguably the finest jazz guitarist in Europe right now, the Dutch Sinti Gypsy Stochelo Rosenberg has performed at the world’s major jazz festivals. Multi award-winning singer, actor, broadcaster, comedian, Shaw (‘our finest’, The Times) celebrates his 60th at beautiful Hall One.
These help you develop a knowledge of core jazz repertoire, understand how to approach improvisation, and explore the practical aspects of putting together a jazz performance. You’ll also receive specialist tuition from visiting artists and musicians prolific on the professional jazz scene which can include participation in masterclasses and performance projects. Recent visiting tutors include saxophonists Tim Garland, Bob Mintzer and Chris Potter, and vibraphonist Victor Mendoza. A recent collaboration with MOBO award-winning ensemble Empirical, themselves Trinity Laban Jazz alumni, saw students and professionals alike experimenting with traditional and contemporary approaches to jazz. The energy and dynamism of these young musicians characterises our commitment to innovative performance.

Our staff, drawn from London’s exhilarating jazz scene, play and perform with students, replicating the feel of the wider jazz community. Sean Gibbs Sean Gibbs is a London based trumpet player/composer, known for his work with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Calum Gourlay Big Band, Young Pilgrims and many others. One of the first black British jazz artists to make a serious mark on the jazz scene, some 30+ years on Courtney Pine CBE continues to break new ground.
